Wherever I turn — Not Without Direction

“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it,' when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” – Isaiah 30:21 (ESV)

This verse has always caused me to pause and marvel at the greatness of God's care. "When you turn to the right or when you turn to the left" —even when His people were tempted to go their own way, God promised to direct them back to His way. What a comfort to know that He does not leave His people to wander without direction.

Earlier in the chapter, in verse 15, Isaiah spoke to people who had trusted their own plans instead of resting in the Lord. Then in verse 18, we are reminded that the Lord waits to be gracious to his people and exalts Himself to show them mercy. That makes His words in verse 21 even more meaningful. His guidance comes from a heart full of grace and mercy.

I recognize that struggle in myself. When I face a decision, I can become so concerned about choosing the right road that I hesitate to take the step God has already made clear. Yet His words are both a kindness and a call to action: "This is the way, walk in it." He invites me to trust Him enough to obey. So I want to turn to Him first. Every choice should be brought under His wisdom and guidance. I can bring my decisions to Him in prayer, let His Word shape my thinking, and ask for wisdom rather than lean only on my own understanding (James 1:5; Proverbs 3:5–6). When the way is unclear, I can wait and seek Him. When His Word makes the next step clear, I can walk in it.

One thing I'm learning to remember is that His guidance is not an invitation to anxiety, but to action–action rooted in trust. When He says, "This is the way, walk in it," I can commit my way to Him, trust Him, and move forward in faith—not in fear. Psalm 37:5 tells me, "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act." I can place the road itself into His hands—my plans, my uncertainty, my next step, and even the outcome.

My responsibility is to seek His wisdom, trust His direction, and obey. Psalm 37:23–24 also reminds me that the Lord establishes the steps of those who follow Him and upholds them even when they stumble. I may not know where every road will lead, but I belong to the One who does (Psalm 24:1). Wherever I turn, I can continue listening for His direction through His Word, seeking His wisdom, and keeping my heart turned toward Him. "There's no wrong turn when following God's GPS." – NB

There is no safer road than the one walked under His wisdom and guidance.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for caring enough to guide me. Forgive me when I trust my own plans more than I trust You. Help me seek Your wisdom in every choice, be willing to hear Your instruction, receive Your correction, and walk in the way You show me. Teach me to commit my way to You and trust You to act. Continue to steady my heart and establish my steps. Wherever I turn, keep my heart turned toward You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Action Steps:

  1. When was the last time you were clear about the way God was leading you to take?

  2. Is the direction you are taking now being shaped by God's Word and wisdom, or mainly by your own plans?

  3. What step has God made clear that you now need to trust Him enough to take?
