Enough Light for the Next Step

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105 NIV)

As I was driving to visit my family for the holidays, it was a late Tuesday evening—not

especially late, but with the time change, 5:00 p.m. felt and looked more like 8:00 p.m. The sun had fully set, and I found myself driving down what seemed like a long, black, never-ending road.

I couldn’t see far ahead—only as far as my headlights would allow. In that moment, I had no choice but to rely on the limited reach of the lights in front of me and the steady voice of Siri guiding me turn by turn. I had driven this route before, so there was a level of comfort knowing I would eventually reach my destination. Still, the navigation provided an added sense of security—it reminded me that even when I couldn’t see the entire road, I wasn’t traveling without direction.

That’s when the Holy Spirit began to speak to me.

Life often feels like that dark road—uncertain and unfamiliar. We don’t know what lies ahead, and we can’t see every twist, turn, or obstacle. But God never asks us to see the entire journey; He asks us to trust Him with the next step. His Word is a lamp to our feet, not a floodlight for the whole road. It provides exactly what we need to move forward—one step at a time.

Just as my headlights reveal only a small part of the road, God’s Word offers daily guidance—enough light to walk in obedience, enough truth to remain on the right path, and enough assurance to trust that He is guiding us safely to our destination. As I continued driving in the darkness, I was struck by the faithfulness and intentionality of God’s Word.

The headlights didn’t illuminate the entire journey; they showed only the space directly in front of me, yet that limited light was sufficient to keep me moving forward. In the same way, God doesn’t always reveal what lies far ahead, but His Word guides my next step and confirms that I’m walking in the right direction. Even when I can’t clearly see the destination, I can fully trust my Heavenly Father to keep me aligned with where He is leading me.

Prayer

Father, we thank You for Your living and faithful Word that directs our lives. Your Word is a lamp to our feet, giving us the light we need for each step You call us to take. Help us to trust You step by step, walking in obedience and refusing to be held back by fear of what we cannot yet see. Guard our hearts from stagnation and give us courage to move forward as You lead. Cover us with Your grace as we face the challenges ahead, knowing that You have already equipped us with everything necessary for this journey. Keep our focus fixed on You, confident that Your Word keeps us aligned on the right path. Thank You for being our guiding light, faithfully leading us through a purposeful and secure walk with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
