A Reflection on Matthew 12:38–50
In this sermon, Pastor Jose Brevil explores the profound warnings Jesus presents in Matthew 12:38–50. This passage highlights the perils of spiritual pride and the importance of genuine humility in our relationship with God. Let's delve into the three dangers emphasized in this scripture.
1. Demanding Signs Without Faith
The Pharisees and teachers of the law ask Jesus for a miraculous sign, not out of faith, but to test Him. Jesus rebukes them, stating that no sign will be given except the sign of the prophet Jonah. This illustrates the danger of seeking signs as a prerequisite for belief, rather than trusting in God's word and character. Such demands can stem from pride, placing our expectations above God's sovereignty.
2. Superficial Cleansing Without Transformation
Jesus speaks of an impure spirit leaving a person and returning to find the house unoccupied, swept clean, and put in order. The spirit then brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and the final condition becomes worse than the first. This warns against superficial spiritual cleansing without true transformation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Pride can lead us to focus on outward appearances while neglecting inner renewal.
3. Misplaced Priorities Over Spiritual Kinship
When Jesus is told that His mother and brothers are waiting to speak with Him, He responds by pointing to His disciples, saying, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." This emphasizes the importance of spiritual kinship over biological ties. Pride can cause us to prioritize personal relationships or status over obedience to God's will.
In a Nutshell
Matthew 12:38–50 serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of spiritual pride. It challenges us to examine our hearts, seek genuine transformation, and prioritize our relationship with God above all else. Embracing humility allows us to experience the fullness of God's grace and align ourselves with His purpose.

Reflection Questions
In what areas of my life am I tempted to demand “signs” or proof from God instead of walking by faith?
Have I focused more on cleaning up the outside of my life rather than allowing God to transform my heart?
Am I truly living as a member of God's spiritual family by doing His will, or am I clinging to personal status or relationships more than obedience?
Practical Action Step
This week, choose one area where pride may be lurking—such as your speech, your time, or your attitude—and intentionally submit it to God in prayer. Ask Him to reveal any hidden pride and replace it with humility and obedience to His will.
